Humane Education is a form of character education that stresses compassion and responsibility in our treatment of animals and their habitats. Hardly a new concept, humane education was introduced to American school children on a broad scale in the late nineteenth century by George Andell, the founder of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Today every humane society has some kind of outreach to the schoolchildren in their communities.At CCHS our programs are available to grades 1-8, in Lincoln County. That includes the towns of Lincoln City, Siletz, Toledo, Newport, Eddyville, Waldport / Yachats. Thanks to a generous grant from the Siletz Tribe, we are able to put a copy of "Kind News', an educational newsletter from HSUS, into the hands of every single child in grade school.
Our current program began in 2002 and since then we have been to 60 classrooms and met some 1300 children. These numbers also include pre-school children in the national HEADSTART Program. We are designing new Outreach Programs to include youth groups, childrens' summer activities and projects to help the shelter animals. To schedule a program for school or group call:
